$600 From some hard working kids
November 11th seems the perfect day for the 4th, 5th and 6th grade class at Eagle River Optional School to come for a tour and present their donation to the museum. They raised $600 selling "tacos-in-a-bag" during parent teacher conferences. They presented a check and a heart-felt thank you to Col Novak and all veterans. Col Suellyn Wright Novak has been doing living histories in Mrs. Spain's class for many years. Kids, thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Your generosity and willingness to work hard for others is commendable.

Fun events at the Museum and Dedication of the Alaska Territorial Guard statue
Come say thank you to the veterans who have secured your freedoms as American citizens this Veteran’s Day. As you will see in the exhibits and stories in the Alaska Veterans Museum, we make history fun and indeed make it come alive. On November 11th, starting at noon we will have talks on the CSS Shenandoah, which on June 25, 1865, fired the last shots of the American Civil War in Alaskan waters (even though Alaska was not yet a US Territory). We will also have a white canvas tent, cannon, static displays, uniformed reenactors and their ladies, hardtack and Johnny cake samples, and a class on paper cartridge making for the weapons of the day. All the above will be provided by the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1620. Also there will be a display of how veterans are still serving their state and nation.
At 2 PM in front of the museum, we will be dedicating the bronze Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) statue. This program will feature local ATG members and musical selections before the unveiling. Then into the museum where Active Duty, and ATG members are free on Veteran’s Day. Remember, museum members are always free.

Director Aboard!!
Our Director, Col Suellyn Wright Novak, was out and about recently. She found herself in Cleveland OH, where she was named Honorary Skipper of USS Cod, SS-224, a Gato Class Submarine. The red carpet was rolled out, she was given a special behind the scenes tour, a Captain's baseball cap and more - Welcome Aboard Skipper!

We still need volunteers to work in shifts in the museum. You never would work alone, and we only ask for a few hours whenever you can give them. Contact us if you would like to volunteer!
