ERASING AN ALASKAN DEFICIENCY
Come April 17, 2011 Alaska will no longer be the only state in the Union without a veterans museum. Come help us realize a 10 year dream when we cut the ribbon (in a very unique way) to dedicate the Alaskan Veterans Museum (AVM) at the Market Place, 333 West 4th Ave, Suite 227, Anchorage. Grand opening hours 1-5 PM Sunday Apr 17th.
Festivities jump off at 1 PM with the patriotic sounds of the Brass of the Air Force Band of the Pacific, followed by presentation of colors, national anthem and invocation. Then we’ll cut the ribbon and let the fun begin. It’ll be an afternoon of music, dancing and singing and refreshments too! Come and see the AVM tell the stories of the individual Serviceman and Woman, through uniforms, artifacts, memorabilia, photos, posters and more. We even have a flight simulator (thank you Alaska Aviation Museum) loaded with 200 aircraft so you can be an F-22 Jock or a civilian hot shot. A 13’ long 1:72 scale scratch-built model of the USS Essex, CV-9, built by John Papineau and donated to AVM. It had 36 1:72 scale aircraft, 100 people plus tugs, firefighting equipment and more. All five services plus the Merchant Marine will be recognized. There will also be a tribute to the Alaska Territorial Guard. You’ll see items and hear stories here you won’t find anywhere else. Come share our fascinating military history where every one of the five Armed Services has had a hand in shaping the Alaska we know and love.
The dream of creating an Alaska Veterans Museum formed in 2001 with a small group headed by our late President, Lloyd Dunham. This group of charter and founding members laid all the firm groundwork upon which later presidents added. The process of becoming incorporated, gaining 501 (c) (3) status, getting an Alaskan business license and solicitation permit is exhausting. They also secured a legislative grant to buy land, a building or (later added) renovate an existing building. Then came years of building name recognition through advertising, manning tables at gun shows, women’s shows, Veterans Gatherings and patriotic functions, retiree appreciation days and more, being in parades, articles and interviews and the annual meeting and fundraiser. Come help us celebrate this crowning achievement and donate generously so we start the capital campaign to build the $6.5 Million dollar museum the students of UAA Architectural Department have designed for us. Come be a part of history yourself, and also help us ensure “They Shall Not Be Forgotten!”
